Celebrating Black History Month

| February 11, 2013

February is Black History Month! The event formerly known as Negro History Week is now an event celebrated every February in the U.S. It was founded in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, an African-American historian who saw the need for the celebration of African-American history. Before then, African Americans were hardly mentioned in history books. Imagine that. Why the month of February? Because it is a month marked by several historical events that impacted the lives of African-Americans, among them the Fifteenth Amendment, which gave us the right to vote.

It’s our history (you can’t tell the African-American story without telling the African story), let’s celebrate it with pride.

Send your history stories to amma@afrikangoddessmag.com and it’ll be published in the February issue as we receive them. All entries will receive a copy of Anna Mwalagho’s CD, Haki Justice.
