Kenyan Police Foil Major Terrorist Attack

| September 17, 2012

Kenyan police foiled a major terrorist attack on Friday and arrested two people suspected of being involved in the planned attack. The plan which was in its final stages of planning could have been deadly if it had gone unnoticed. Police found explosive devices and seized a cache of weapons and ammunition from the two people arrested, officials said.

Eight other suspects, including the would-be bombers and the masterminds behind the planned attack are still being sought by police.   Among other things seized in the raid were four suicide vests rigged with hundreds of metal ball bearings, similar to the one used in attacks in Uganda on crowds watching the World Cup Soccer final in July 2010 (the blast killed 76 people), two improvised explosive devices, also rigged with ball bearings, four AK-47 assault rifles, ammunition and 12 grenades.

One of the two suspects arrested on Friday pleaded guilty today to possession of six bombs including four suicide vests and being a member of al-Shabab, a Somali Islamist extremist group linked to al-Qaida. The group has threatened terrorist attacks in Kenya in the past.
