Fostering Old and New Relationships in the New Year

| January 12, 2012

It’s the New Year! The season for inspiration, and the time for making promises and setting goals you intend to keep and a good time to think about fostering both old and new relationships. However, whether you plan to start, nurture, maintain or end a relationship in the year 2012, the most important relationship that matters, is the one you have with yourself. So before you think of mending or starting any old or new relationships this New Year, remember the following:

Be yourself!

People must be able to love you for who you are and not for what they want you to be or what you think they want you to be. It’s the same way you must also be able to love people for who they are and not for who you want them to be or, worse, who you are afraid they are. Get to know yourself and others, before you pass any quick judgments!

Know yourself!

Know what makes you tick. Find out what you find attractive and unattractive in the opposite sex and why. Ask yourself what you can and cannot tolerate in any kind of relationship. The answers to these questions will give you the clues you need when dealing with people this year. If you are simply putting up with someone, now is the time to reflect on whether to end or talk out that relationship. If a relationship is burning you out and causing you to resent yourself and the person you are putting up with, maybe it is time to let them go.

Love yourself!

Love yourself enough to know what you deserve. Only then will you know what you will and will not accept from others, no matter how deep the attraction. Do not allow anyone to trample all over you. Know and respect your boundaries and let them know when they have crossed that line.

All in all, know what you mean when you think of your ideal relationship with anyone, be it love, family or friendships, remembering that it is important that your relationships maintain a level of trust and respect.

Best of luck to you in love, family and friendships in the year 2012!  Make it work or let it go!
